Some Interesting Notes:
Galena's fame arises from the civilian life of General Ulysses S. Grant.
He was born Hiram Ulysses Grant and his nickname was Lyss. When U.S. Congressman, Thomas L. Hamer nominated him to West Point he incorrect called him Ulysses Simpson Grant. Later Grant would call himself Ulysses S. Grant. After graduation of from West Point he became a quartermaster. During the civil war he was nicknamed "Unconditional Surrender" Grant.
Blackhawk Area Council of the Boy Scouts of America is the current host
About 85% of Galena, Illinois is listed in the National Register of Historic Places
Grant was the 18th President of the United States of America.
The first pilgrimage was started on April 23, 1955
The pilgrimage typically takes place the last full weekend in April
About 5,000 to 10,000 scouts a year attend!
In 1972 they had over 11,000 scouts.
